1. Always keep your version of WordPress up to date. One of the good things about WordPress is that even though it’s a free platform, the developers are continuously making improvements. New versions are often released that not only enhance your website functionality but also protect it from known threats.
Log-in to the admin area of your site and you will see whether your WordPress version is up to date. There should be a message at the top on a yellow background advising you to update it. Click on the link and update your site. Note – before doing any updates it is advisable to take a back up of your site.
2. This next piece of advice comes from Matt Cutts of Google. He recommends changing your .htaccess file. You can specify which IP addresses can access your wp-admin. When a user accesses your wp-admin directory and the user’s IP address is not on the list, they will get a 403 Forbidden Site Error.
3. Sign-up with Google Webmaster Tools and verify that you are the owner of your website. In your Webmaster Tools Dashboard, under Diagnostics click Malware to see if your website has malware problems.

4. You can also install the limit login attempt plugin. This plugin will lockout that IP address that has too many failed login attempts. You can set how many retries and how many hours it will be locked down.
If someone entered the wrong password or username, the plugin will give a warning on how many remaining attempts are still left.
When it reaches the maximum number of allowed retries, it will give you an Error message, and in how many minutes or hours you will be able to retry again.
What’s good about this plugin is you can see the IP addresses that are attempting to login and how many times it was locked in by the plugin.
